Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Just revisited the galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)! This prequel sets the stage for Anakin Skywalker’s rise to Darth Vader, introducing a young Jedi duo and a podracing champion who’ll change the galaxy’s fate.
The special effects were groundbreaking in 1999, and the lightsaber duels are impressive. Liam Neeson brings gravitas to the wise Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. But some CGI moments haven’t aged as well, especially Jar Jar Binks…a character whose comedic relief lands with a thud.
The plot can be slow at times, weighed down by exposition and political machinations. The child actors, particularly a young Jake Lloyd as Anakin, deliver uneven performances.
Die-hard Star Wars fans might enjoy the deeper lore and the chance to see familiar characters in their youth. But for newcomers, The Phantom Menace might feel like a bumpy ride to a galaxy not so far, far away.
